"We now have an economy powered by human creativity… Creativity is the decisive source of competitive advantage… Technological and economic creativity are nurtured by and interact with artistic and cultural creativity."
Richard Florida, The Rise of the Creative Class

Other than needing rooms for cast and crew members, the film industry does not translate into large-scale hotel room occupancy. Broadway South will.

For example, more than forty-seven million people live within an eight-hour drive to New Orleans, and with the added allure of world class entertainers performing across the state, these residents will easily travel all over Louisiana to take advantage of our theatrical offerings, thereby creating a constant flow of tourists in need of hotel rooms.

Here is an example of how hotels will be affected. In New Orleans there are four theaters with a total capacity of 10,900 seats:

• the Loews (3700 seats)
• the Saenger (2700 seats)
• the Orpheum (2000 seats)
• the Joy (1500 seats)

If these four theaters sell 60-70% of their capacity for 210-240 days per year, tourists will absorb from 4.1% to as much as 8.5% of all hotel rooms in the city over the course of a year. This translates to an enormous impact – 463,050 to 964,688 hotel rooms occupied by theater-attending tourists. As a point of comparison, in 2004 all of the major conventions at the convention center accounted for 2,197,000 hotel rooms or just over 18 percent of all available hotel rooms in New Orleans.
(Research provided by Dr. James A. Richardson, Chairman of the Research Committee for the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana)

As shows travel and open in theaters throughout Louisiana, the hotel occupancy benefits will be positive statewide. From the Hilton in Baton Rouge to the Hotel Acadiana in Lafayette, from the Best Suites in Lake Charles to the Chateau Suite Hotel in Shreveport, Broadway South means sustained higher occupancy.
